Rapid Prototyping - A Tool for Presenting 3-Dimensional Digital Models Produced by Terrestrial Laser Scanning
نویسندگان
چکیده
Rapid prototyping has received considerable interest with the introduction of affordable rapid prototyping machines. These machines can be used to manufacture physical models from three-dimensional digital mesh models. In this paper, we compare the results obtained with a new, affordable, rapid prototyping machine, and a traditional professional machine. Two separate data sets are used for this, both of which were acquired using terrestrial laser scanning. Both of the machines were able to produce complex and highly detailed geometries in plastic material from models based on terrestrial laser scanning. The dimensional accuracies and detail levels of the machines were comparable, and the physical artifacts caused by the fused deposition modeling (FDM) technique used in the rapid prototyping machines could be found in both models. The accuracy of terrestrial laser scanning exceeded the requirements for manufacturing physical models of large statues and building segments at a 1:40 scale. OPEN ACCESS ISPRS Int. J. Terrestrial Laser Scanning and Digital Photogrammetry Techniques to Monitor Landslide Bodies
Photogrammetry and laser scanning, thanks to significant development in last years, are comparable surveying techniques to generate without object contact and with a precision commensurate with scale Digital Terrain Models (DTMs), a fundamental tool to detect, classify and monitoring landslides. The traditional way to survey the territory for landslide detection purposes is aerial or, in some c...
متن کاملMaintainingmomentum in Terrestrial Laser Scanning: a Uk Case Study
Terrestrial laser scanning has been rapidly adopted around the world as a tool for capturing three-dimensional survey data in a variety of applications. This rapid take up continues, but clients, and therefore data providers, are becoming increasingly interested in ensuring that data is fit for purpose and provides value for money. Specific professional guidance is required in response to this ...
متن کاملEarthquake Deformation Analysis Using Terrestrial Scanning Laser - Lidar Technology
Earthquakes leave in their wake permanently deformed ground. These deformations take on extremely complex surfaces and shapes. A new technology, 3-D laser-scanning Light Detection And Ranging (LIDAR), allows for the rapid and remote sensing of damaged terrain to construct ultra-high resolution 3-D models of the ground. Scanning LIDAR targets the damaged area with sequenced LASER pulses that, in...
متن کاملCAD-CAM generated ear cast by means of a laser scanner and rapid prototyping machine.
Sculpting a wax ear cast for use when making a definitive prosthesis for a patient who has had auricle ablative surgery, is challenging. It requires a skilled anaplastologist along with complex instrumentation able to perform facial laser scans and reproduce anatomic details. The aim of this article is to present a technique to create a cast by laser scanning a stone cast of the existing ear. A...
متن کاملApplying Terrestrial Laser Scanning for Soil Surface Roughness Assessment
Terrestrial laser scanning can provide high-resolution, two-dimensional sampling of soil surface roughness. While previous studies demonstrated the usefulness of these roughness measurements in geophysical applications, questions about the number of required scans and their resolution were not investigated thoroughly. Here, we suggest a method to generate digital elevation models, while preserv...
